Lesson 5.1: Turning Creative Observations Into Conceptual Research Questions

By this point in the course, you have practiced observing emotion, sensation, memory, and behavior without rushing to diagnose or oversimplify. The next step is to turn those observations into conceptual research questions. A research question is not a claim, a judgment, or a fixed answer. It is a focused way of asking what might be happening, under what conditions, and through which patterns.

In this course, conceptual research questions are especially useful because the material sits across art, reflection, psychology, and lived experience. Many of the ideas we have explored are frameworks for inquiry rather than proofs. That means your task is not to force certainty. Your task is to ask better questions.

A strong conceptual research question usually has five qualities. It is clear enough to understand, specific enough to explore, open enough to allow discovery, grounded in observable material, and connected to a meaningful concept. If a question is too broad, it becomes vague. If it is too narrow, it may only confirm what you already assume. If it is too abstract, it disconnects from actual experience. If it is too personal without structure, it can become reflection without inquiry.

Consider the difference between an observation and a question. An observation might be, people often choose darker colors when describing stress. A weak question would be, why do stressed people use dark colors? That wording assumes a direct cause and oversimplifies the pattern. A stronger conceptual question would be, how might color choice in reflective art relate to perceived stress, emotional intensity, or sensory memory in a given context? This version stays curious. It leaves room for multiple influences.
