A Father's Day Shout-Out: The Memories Live On

Father's Day has a way of bringing memories back to life.

My own father has passed on, but his influence remains. This year, as I watched the Netherlands defeat Sweden 5–1, I found myself thinking about him. He would have loved seeing the excitement of FIFA World Cup soccer being hosted across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Moments like these remind us that even when someone is gone, the experiences, traditions, and passions they shared with us continue to shape our lives.

That may be one of the greatest gifts Father's Day offers: the opportunity to remember. A game, a song, a family meal, a road trip, or a simple conversation can bring back memories that feel as real today as they did years ago. The people we love leave footprints on our hearts, and those footprints often appear in the moments we least expect.

As we celebrate Father's Day, it is also worth recognizing that fatherly guidance comes from many places. Fathers, dads, father figures, and role models can be found throughout our lives:

• Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers

• Older brothers, uncles, cousins, and family friends

• Coaches, mentors, and teachers

• Community centre leaders and youth workers

• Elders and spiritual leaders

• Neighbours who look out for others

• Employers, supervisors, and business leaders

• Police officers, firefighters, and first responders

• Military veterans and public servants

• Government leaders who serve their communities

• Volunteers who dedicate their time to helping others

These individuals often teach us values that help build stronger families and communities:

This Father's Day, let us celebrate not only the fathers who are with us today, but also those who live on through the lessons they taught, the memories they created, and the values they passed down.
